Danebury Iron Age hill fort

You can’t really experience Danebury hill fort until you’re almost inside it, but the tree cover also adds to the atmosphere conjured up by this extensive fort. Set on a small hill in an otherwise flat landscape it boasts three sets of banks and ditches, covers 5 hectares and was occupied for 500 years. It’s also one of the most excavated forts in the UK with almost 60% excavation of its total area carried out by Barry Cunliffe in the 1970s.
